Keyword: International A collaborative initiative of Kelly Strayhorn Theater and Carnegie Museum of Art

18 Jan 2018

What makes this “rust belt city” so dynamic, diverse, international?

Leading contemporary arts organizations collaborate to support creative research.

Kelly Strayhorn Theater and Carnegie Museum of Art are pleased to announce Keyword: International, a collaborative initiative to creatively define Pittsburgh as an international city at this moment in time. The initiative will support three interrelated activities: research, a public symposium, and a publication.

“At precisely the moment when Pittsburgh is growing with the intention of attracting more creative people, Keyword: International is a small investment in big thinking.” —janera solomon, Executive Director, Kelly Strayhorn Theater

Keyword: International is designed for Pittsburgh’s arts activators to spark a public conversation—one that shifts or expands the local narrative. The initiative will launch on January 18, 2018 with an open call for research proposals from organizations large and small, curators, and programmers. Up to twenty $1,500 microgrants will be awarded to support creative research that explores the meaning of “international” in terms of audience and mission, vision or aspiration. A review panel, including three community members, will award the grants, to be announced in April 2018. Key criteria will be the imaginative potential of the research to connect with ideas, communities, and urgent conversations, as well as the practical scope of the proposal. Keyword: International fellows will present their findings at a lively public forum and celebration on October 20, 2018. In culmination, a commissioned writer will offer an interpretive account of the research to be published in the 2018 Carnegie International catalogue. One of the most historic exhibitions of contemporary art in the world, the Carnegie International has been taking place at the Carnegie Museum of Art since 1896, making a unique catalyst for Keyword: International.

“Harking to the pioneering social study done here in the early 20th century, this ‘Pittsburgh Survey’ will define what ‘international’ means in the art world on a local level today.” —Ingrid Schaffner, Curator, 2018 Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art
